Who we are
On your left you can see our team at Topline Phelans. The staff comes from all the surrounding areas including Durrow, Ballinakill, Castlecomer, Ballyragget and Gortnahoe, and our varied locations help us to service all these areas. Each staff member has been with us for at least 10 years with the exception of our new recruit Cathal, and they bring a vast amount of knowledge and experience to the business and to you our customer.
What we do
We try to meet the needs of all shoppers in our community, so our shop includes a wide range of retail and DIY products. Topline Phelans has long been known as a builders’ providers to the local trade and continues to be so, stocking all the items required to carry out that extension or to build a new home. In recent years we have expanded to also include doors and floors, bathrooms, electrical goods and even some washing powders and cleaning products.
The business was founded by John (known as Jack) Phelan in 1955 when he opened a small shop in Carrigan Street, Durrow, Co. Laois. In 1961 he purchased a premises at Castle Street, Durrow and it is from there that the business now operates. In 1988 his son John returned to the business after Jack had purchased the second premises in Ballyragget. The business thrived throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s and like everyone, was hit badly by the recession of 2008. Nonetheless the business survived that testing time and in 2012 John took over the running of Topline Clearys in Carrick on Suir. The business still currently operates from all three premises. Jack Phelan loved dealing with the local public and was always very grateful to them for all their support.
The local community
We have always been linked closely to the local community and participate in as many local fundraising initiatives as possible, whether it be the local GAA club, soccer team, scarecrow organisers or just a local charity.
The Topline group
Back in the early 1970’s, Jack Phelan realised that he needed to improve his purchasing power if he was to continue to provide competitive prices to his customers. With this in mind he joined a number of other merchants in an effort to attain maximum discount from their suppliers. Before long they had employed a man to carry out the buying for them. This was the beginning of the Topline group, a buying group that now includes over 150 stores nationwide and is the foremost buying group in the country. The group enables every affiliated store to compete with the likes of Woodies, Chadwicks, B&Q, Arro Hardware etc., while remaining independently owned and run on a local basis by the local merchant. The group also provides numerous other services for the merchant including training, education and marketing.
